Rochester traffic backups expected on southbound Hwy 63 south of Hwy 52 beginning Sept. 23
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Southbound Hwy 63 motorists south of Hwy 52 in Rochester will encounter lane closures and possible traffic slowdowns beginning Sept. 23 during the installation of cable median barrier, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Construction crews will close the left lane for southbound Hwy 63 south of Hwy 52 beginning on Sept. 23. Traffic will remain open for southbound Hwy 63, but it’s possible there will be traffic slowdowns especially during afternoon commuting. Northbound traffic will not have any lane restrictions.
The installation work is expected to be completed by mid-October.
Cable median barrier was first installed in Minnesota in 2004. Since that time, it has proven to be 95 percent effective at reducing Minnesota fatal and life-changing crashes caused by vehicles crossing the median into oncoming traffic. Similar results have been found in many other states. In southeast Minnesota, MnDOT completed installation of cable median barrier on I-35 from the Iowa border to the Twin Cities. Additional work is taking place on Hwy 52 and Hwy 63, among other areas in southeast Minnesota. To learn more, go to MnDOT’s website: mndot.gov/trafficeng/reports/cmbarrier.html
