Fiber optic installation for Traffic Management System begins April 15 along Hwy 14 from North Mankato towards Nicollet

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be expanding its fiber optic network from North Mankato towards Nicollet starting April 15, weather permitting, to improve its traffic management system.
The project will include the installation of new fiber optic cable along westbound Highway 14 from North Mankato towards Nicollet. Crews will also install new traffic monitoring system cameras for maintenance and non-intrusive vehicle detection devices for traffic data collection.  Camera feeds will be intermittently monitored, typically as part of incident (e.g.: crash) response efforts, or to verify road pavement conditions.
Motorists should expect shoulder closures along the highway and watch for crews working near the roadway. The project is expected to be completed by early August, weather permitting.

Premier Electrical Corporation was awarded the project with a bid of $621,971.25.

Important work zone safety reminders:

  • Slow down when approaching every work zone
  • Never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones
  • Stay alert; watch for workers and slow-moving equipment
  • Obey posted speed limits. Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300
  • Minimize distractions behind the wheel
  • Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times
