Traffic sign replacement on Interstate 90 begins April 23 in South Central and Southwest Minnesota

MANKATO, Minn. – The replacement of traffic signs which are at the end of their service lives will begin on April 23 along Interstate 90 in Rock, Nobles, and Martin counties, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

MnDOT replaces traffic signs on a 15-year cycle to ensure signs are legible for motorists during the day and at night. Over time, traffic signs experience wear and tear, and frequently lose reflectivity in low-light conditions long before indications of their age are obvious in normal conditions.

There will be little impact to traffic, however, MnDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and watch for crews working near the roadway. The project is expected to be completed by early June, weather permitting.

H & R Construction Company was awarded the project with a bid of $271,028.

Important work zone safety reminders:

  • Slow down when approaching every work zone
  • Never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones
  • Stay alert; watch for workers and slow-moving equipment
  • Obey posted speed limits. Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300
  • Minimize distractions behind the wheel
  • Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times
