Southeast Minnesota state bridge crack and joint sealing project begins July 8
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Motorists traveling on various state highways in Goodhue, Wabasha and Winona counties should plan for extra travel time beginning Monday, July 8, as crews begin route and sealing work to help extend state bridges’ life expectancy, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Work begins July 8 in Winona County, and will proceed to Wabasha and Goodhue counties, as weather permits. Crews will be working Monday through Saturday during daylight hours. It is anticipated that work should be completed in September.
Bridges scheduled for sealing work include:
- Highway 61 bridges near Red Wing
- Highway 63 over the Mississippi River, Highway 61 and Bluff Street in Red Wing
- Highway 52 bridges at Hader, northbound bridge over the North Fork Zumbro River, south junction of Highway 60
- Highway 60 over the Mississippi River at Wabasha
- Highway 61 bridges near Kellogg
- Highway 60 bridge west of Zumbro Falls
- Highway 61 bridges near Minnesota City
- Highway 43 bridges over the Mississippi River in Winona
- Highway 74 bridge near Elba
Traffic impacts
Sealing work will cause traffic impacts. Motorists should expect traffic delays through the work zones, especially on two-lane bridges. People can view 511mn.org or the free mobile app to see where the traffic impacts are.
- Lane closures with flagging operations or a pilot car for traffic control will occur in most work zones.
- The 3rd Street bridge over Bluff Street in Red Wing will be detoured to Highway 61 during daytime hours. Traffic will be detoured south to the signal at Highway 61/ 63. This detour date has not yet been determined.
- The pedestrian bridge over Highway 61 near Anderson Park in Red Wing will be closed during daytime hours. This closure date has not been determined.
Safety in work zones
Motorists should always be prepared to encounter traffic changes when approaching work zones including lane closures, lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, slow-moving heavy equipment and slow or stopped traffic. To keep everyone safe, drivers must:
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
- Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
- Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.

- Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Do the zipper merge.
- Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
