Hwy 59 detour south of Garvin begins July 25
WILLMAR, Minn. – A second detour for the Highway 59 concrete repair project south of Marshall and south of Garvin begins July 25, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Highway 59 will close south of Garvin from 201st Street to Lyon County Road 14. Travelers will be detoured on Highway 14 and County Roads 48, 29, and 5.
The first project detour, south of Marshall, began July 8 when Highway 59 closed from Highway 23 to County Road 6. Maps of the work zones and detour routes are attached and additional information about traffic impacts during the project are detailed below. Both detours will be in place for up to five working days.
The project is expected to end Oct. 18, depending on weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.
Traffic impacts
Two detours are required to complete the concrete repairs.
- Highway 59 is detoured south of Marshall. Traffic is routed on Highway 23, and County Roads 35 and 6.
- Beginning July 25, Highway 59 south of Garvin will be detoured for about seven weeks. Traffic will be routed on Highway 14 and County Roads 5, 29 and 48.
- Both detours will be in place for up to five working days.
- Short term, intermittent intersection closures will take place for ADA improvements and minor detours may be required.
- Businesses along the project route are open and accessible.
Project summary
The concrete road surface is being repaired on two sections of Highway 59.
- South of Marshall: Highway 59 from Lyon County Road 6 to Highway 23
- South of Garvin: Highway 59 from 201st Street to Lyon County Road 14
Sidewalks and pedestrian crossings in Marshall are being upgraded to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
- Along Highway 19 from the intersection of Highway 23 to the intersection of Tiger Drive
- Where Highway 59 intersects with Susan Drive and with Boyer Drive
Project benefits and cost
Benefits of the project include a smoother road surface and enhanced safety for people who walk and bike. Interstate Improvement, Inc., is the contractor, and the project cost is approximately $4.4 million.
