Reminder: I-494 closed, detoured in Inver Grove Heights May 15-19

ROSEVILLE, Minn. —Crews will close both directions of I-494 between Blaine Avenue and Babcock Trail in Inver Grove Heights for demolition work on the southbound Hwy 52 bridge and two ramps, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Prior to the weekend closure, MnDOT crews will close the ramp from westbound I-494 ramp to southbound Hwy 52, and southbound Hwy 52 ramp to eastbound I-494, starting at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 15.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, May 16, I-494 will be closed in both directions between Blaine Avenue and Babcock Trail, including all Hwy 52 ramps to I-494. All I-494 lanes, and two ramps, will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, May 19.

During the weekend closure, motorists traveling westbound on I-494 will use northbound Hwy 52 to Mendota Road to southbound Highway 52 to westbound I-494 as a detour.

Motorists traveling on eastbound I-494 will use southbound Highway 52 to eastbound 70th Street to northbound Highway 52 to eastbound I-494 as a detour.

This closure is necessary as crews begin redecking the bridges and paving ramps on Highway 52 over I-494.

After May 19, traffic will be head-to-head on the northbound Highway 52 bridge between Upper 55th Street and Mendota Road/Southview Boulevard. Also, the westbound I-494 to southbound Highway 52 and southbound Highway 52 to eastbound I-494 ramps will remain closed through July 22.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, and slow down in work zones where workers are present.

MnDOT will be redecking and repainting the Hwy 52 bridges over I-494 in 2025 to extend the lifespan of the bridges. This work is happening now to take advantage of IIJA funding  made available to the State. All work is expected to wrap up November 2025.
