Work begins May 16 on communication upgrades along I-94 in Moorhead
DETROIT LAKES, Minn.—Starting Friday, May 16, weather permitting, motorists will encounter shoulder closures and periodic lane closures in both directions on Interstate 94 west of Highway 336 in Moorhead, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Crews will be starting a project to install fiber communications, overhead message boards and cameras along I-94 for improved traffic management.
The work is being done in stages over the next several months. What motorists can expect:
- Starting May 16 through August 2025: Shoulder closures in both directions
- May 19 – May 22: Nightly lane closures in both directions, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- June 9 – June 13: Lane closures in both directions during daytime hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Early August: Nightly lane closures, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and an overnight closure and detour
MnDOT is in coordination with the North Dakota Department of Transportation, as a portion of this project will take place on the North Dakota side of the river. That work is scheduled to take place in 2026 to accommodate completion of the Red River bridge resurfacing project.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change at any time. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and slow down in work zones where workers are present.
