Highway 61 temporary detour in Hovland starts Aug. 6

DULUTH, Minn. –  The Minnesota Department of Transportation is currently working on culvert replacements on Highway 61 between Grand Marais and Grand Portage. Starting on Aug. 6, Highway 61 will be temporarily detoured in Hovland. Traffic will be routed on County Road 16/Arrowhead Trail to County Road 69/North Road for up to 12 consecutive calendar days. The highway will be fully closed to replace a culvert at an unnamed creek.

Culvert work at Myhr Creek (milepost 124.83) has a temporary single lane bypass controlled by a signal. Work at Otis Creek (milepost 129.36) will be complete on Aug. 5.

This project will replace culverts at six different locations around Hovland over two years. For maps and project information, please visit the website at mndot.gov/d1/projects/hwy61-grand-marais-culverts.

  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at 511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
