Highway 200 detour begins Monday, Aug. 25 near Remer
Willow River bridge closed, truck restrictions in effect
BAXTER, Minn. –Starting Monday, Aug. 25, travelers will encounter Highway 200 closed and detoured southeast of Highway 6 in Remer, Cass County, reports the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The $2.5 million project will construct a new bridge over the Willow River, designed to last 60-plus years.
Here’s what will occur on Highway 200 through late October:
- Semi-trucks must use the signed truck detour: Bridge restricted to trucks more than 40 feet long or with a nine-ton axle weight. Follow detour along Highway 6 in Remer to Highway 2 south of Deer River, then back to Highway 200 south of Wawina (entire route 58 miles).
- Consider these mid-point alternatives:
- Highway 169 from Grand Rapids to Hill City
- Highway 65 from Swan River to Highway 200
- Emergency responders and local smaller vehicles that live near closure ONLY: The speed limit is reduced to 30 mph and a narrow temporary bypass bridge is in operation at the work site. A temporary signal is used to allow alternate one-way traffic across. Drivers should prepare to stop and wait.
- Through travelers, especially those with large recreational vehicles, trailers or campers, should also use the truck detour or another route. This keeps the temporary bridge clear for local emergency responders and those living near Remer and Hill City.
