Westbound I-94 in St. Paul to close April 17 weekend for bridge work

ROSEVILLE, Minn. —As reconstruction continues on the John Ireland Boulevard bridge over Interstate 94 in St. Paul, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will close a portion of westbound I-94 from 10 p.m. Friday, April 17 through 5 a.m. Monday, April 20.

Westbound I-94 will close between Marion Street and I-35E so crews can safely finish setting bridge beams over westbound I-94.

Traffic will be detoured around the closure via northbound I-35E, Highway 36 and southbound Highway 280. Detoured motorists may encounter increased traffic on southbound Highway 280, which will remain open while work continues on northbound Highway 280 between I-94 and Highway 36. Additional road closures also are needed as crews place beams for the new bridge, including:

5 a.m. Wednesday, April 15 through 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 21 – southbound John Ireland Boulevard between Martin Luther King Boulevard and 12th Street.
5 a.m. Thursday, April 16 through 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 21 – northbound John Ireland Boulevard between 12th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard.
10 a.m. Friday, April 17, until 10 a.m. on Monday, April 20 – 12th Street between Wabasha Street and Rondo Avenue. Traffic will be detoured via Cedar Street, Martin Luther King Boulevard, University Avenue and Marion Street to westbound I-94.

This project is on schedule and the bridge is expected to reopen in August, weather permitting. We appreciate your patience during construction.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule dependent and subject to change.

MnDOT encourages people traveling in and around downtown St. Paul to plan ahead and review closures, especially for high-traffic summer events. MnDOT also urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and slow down in work zones where workers are present.
