Study results

After completing the study, MnDOT recommends replacing the two signal systems with mini roundabouts. However, at this time, there is no planned project or funding available. The signal system will remain in place until a project is developed in the future.

The mini roundabout as the preferred alternative for the following reasons:

  • Safest form of traffic control for all users
  • Least amount of delay for all users
  • Reduces vehicle speeds in the downtown area
  • Provides U-Turn opportunity for those looking for parking
  • Easily and efficiently handles large fluctuations in traffic including seasonal changes and special events

Summary of work

The signal lights at the intersections of Hwy 1/Third Avenue and Hwy 1/Central Avenue in Ely have reached the end of their useful life. MnDOT is conducting an intersection control evaluation (ICE) to determine what traffic control should replace them. We are doing our due diligence by studying multiple options.

Demonstration Project

MnDOT will be conducting a demonstration project by placing both existing signals into a flashing red and adding stop signs. This project will test the effectiveness for potentially placing a mini roundabout or a four way stop permanently.

This demonstration project will be put in place during the winter of 2025-2026 and then again during summer 2026.
