Closures during entire 2025 construction:

• I-90 westbound and eastbound traffic will travel in single lanes adjacent to each other on I-90 westbound in the project area (scheduled April 4 to November) while the new I-90 eastbound bridge is being constructed
• Eastbound I-90 off-ramp to Hwy 52 closed (scheduled April 4 to November)
• Continue on eastbound I-90 and take Exit 224 (Eyota exit) - detour map
  • To go south on Hwy 52, go south on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 which intersects with Hwy 52
• To go north on Hwy 52, turn left over bridge and exit onto westbound I-90, take ramp to Hwy 52 (Exit 218)
• Hwy 52 closed, south of eastbound I-90 on-ramp (scheduled April 8 to November) - detour map
• To travel north on Hwy 52 (from Chatfield), go north on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 and exit onto westbound I-90, take ramp to Hwy 52 (Exit 218)
• To travel south on Hwy 52 (from Rochester), exit to I-90 eastbound, take Exit 224 (Eyota exit), take a right and go south on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 which intersects with Hwy 52
• Northbound Hwy 52 on-ramp to eastbound I-90 closed (scheduled April 8 to November)
• Go north on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 and exit onto eastbound I-90 - detour map
• Northbound Hwy 52 on-ramp to westbound I-90 closed (scheduled April 8 to November)
  • Go north on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 and exit onto westbound I-90 - detour map

Temporary closures during 2025 construction:

• During eastbound I-90 bridge removal (scheduled April 8-12):
  • Hwy 52 closure will extend further north - it will be closed south of westbound I-90 on-ramp to south of eastbound I-90 on-ramp
  • The Hwy 52 on-ramp to I-90 eastbound will be closed
  • Map showing above two temporary closures and ones that go through November
  • The Hwy 52 southbound on-ramp to I-90 westbound will be closed (not shown on above map)
• To travel north on Hwy 52 (from Chatfield), go north on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 and exit onto westbound I-90, take ramp to Hwy 52 (Exit 218) - detour map
• To travel south on Hwy 52 (from Rochester), exit to Hwy 63 southbound, exit to eastbound I-90, take Exit 224 (Eyota exit), take a right and go south on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 which intersects with Hwy 52 - detour map
• Five separate one-day closures during the construction of the new eastbound I-90 bridge for the placement and removal of the falsework and for the bridge deck pour - dates will be announced once schedule is finalized

Open during 2025 construction:

• Westbound I-90 off-ramp to northbound Hwy 52
• Southbound Hwy 52 on-ramp to westbound I-90
• Southbound Hwy 52 on-ramp to eastbound I-90 (with the exception of temporary closures)

About this project

Summary of work

Construction is scheduled 2024-2026 to make changes to the I-90/Hwy 52 interchange to improve safety and reduce delays.

• 2024: Constructed temporary crossovers and begin new ramps and loops
• 2025 (April to November): Construct new eastbound I-90 bridge, flyover bridge over Hwy 52 and portion of new ramps and loop
• 2026: Construct new westbound I-90 bridge and remaining portion of new ramps and loops

Improvements

A new feature, a flyover ramp, for southbound Hwy 52 to eastbound I-90, will solve several problems:

• Remove 92% of left-hand turns, reducing the risk for t-bone crashes
• The dedicated ramp will get rid of the line of vehicles that wait to turn

New ramps will reduce the run-off-the-road crashes:

• Changing the angles will allow for better, more controlled entrance/exit
• Lengthened accelerations lanes will also improve conditions

The bridge replacements will allow for:

• Relocation of the bridge piers that block the view of on-coming traffic
• Improved bridges that will last another 60 years or more
