Building a better Brainerd: Construction begins the week of May 11
Washington Street update
BAXTER, Minn. –The week after the fishing opener (May 11-18), Highway 210/Washington Street will close and detour as construction begins on two new roundabouts between Tenth and Fifth Avenue NE (mall segment).
What to expect through early August:
- Highway 210 will be one lane in each direction, 24/7, and detour around the work area. Follow signs along 10th Avenue NE and Highway 25.
- A temporary traffic signal will operate at 10th Avenue NE and Highway 25.
- Expect delays; consider alternate routes or off-peak travel.
- Brainerd remains open. Local access will be maintained. A local detour will use Fourth Avenue NE and E Street NE to reach the mall area and northeast neighborhood. Pedestrian access will also change, follow directional signs.
- Truck detour: County Road 3 (Mill Avenue) will close at Highway 210. Follow signs along Highway 210, NW Fourth Street, Riverside Drive, Beaver Dam Road, County Road 49 (Wise Road) and County Road 3.
Crews will rebuild the roadway and medians, update City watermain and storm sewer systems, and construct both roundabouts. Drivers are reminded to slow down in work zones and watch for workers, equipment, and changing road conditions.
In early August, work will shift west to the railyard segment between Fifth Avenue NE and Kingwood Street. For details and to sign up for email updates, visit the Highway 210 project webpage.
When all lanes open in fall 2027, the $46 million project will bring safer travel, smoother traffic flow and dependable access — all while creating a better and more beautiful Brainerd.
